• Listening:
  • CELPIP: The Listening section includes everyday Canadian contexts, and the questions are often straightforward, based on conversations, daily interactions, and announcements.
  • IELTS: Listening covers a broader range of accents (British, Australian, etc.), which can make it more challenging. The test is broken into four sections, with increasing difficulty.
• Reading:
  • CELPIP: Reading is entirely computer-based and focuses on Canadian life and society. The questions involve email messages, social media posts, and formal announcements.
  • IELTS: Reading is either Academic or General, with Academic being more complex, involving technical passages. General focuses on workplace and social situations. IELTS reading often requires detailed comprehension.
• Writing:
  • CELPIP: The Writing section is concise, with tasks including a letter and an opinion piece, reflecting Canadian-style communication. Instructions are direct, and there’s less variety in tasks compared to IELTS.
  • IELTS: IELTS writing includes an essay and, for Academic, a description of a graph or chart. It is slightly more demanding as it requires a structured approach and in-depth vocabulary.
• Speaking:
  • CELPIP: Speaking tasks are pre-recorded on a computer, with prompts based on everyday topics. Responses are straightforward, and since it’s Canadian-based, it may be easier for North American English speakers.
